www.projectnewstart.eu - Through the development and provision of lifelong learning, this EC Grundtvig Project addresses issues of discrimination and social exclusion encountered by deaf and severely hearing impaired adult refugees and asylum seekers, particularly those who, in their countries of birth, have received little or no basic education. This is often compounded by the use of fragments of spoken or signed languages to compensate for the lack of a mother tongue.

Records of the partners demonstrate that between 10% and 60% of every group of deaf or severely hearing impaired adult students are refugees or asylum seekers, with an increasing number of multiply disabled refugees. Therefore this Project addresses a major educational and social issue for the whole of the EU.

Through the transnational partnership work of this Project, the very practical outcomes encourage and enable active citizenship by these immigrants by creating learning environments and materials relating to their individual learning needs and communication skills at the time of entry into their host countries so that they can more readily and effectively develop pro-active roles in their new societies.
